Background

Amelia joined Dehns in July 2017 as a Technical Assistant in the Engineering group, after completing a four year Master’s Degree in Physics and Philosophy at the University of Oxford. Amelia qualified as a UK and European Patent Attorney in 2021. She became an Associate in 2023. 

Type of clients and client work

Amelia works with a large range of clients, from small companies and start-ups to large multinationals, handling patent applications both in the UK and Europe, as well as in a large variety of other territories around the world. Amelia has experience working with a number of university technology transfer offices and university spin-outs.

She has experience providing support for all aspects of patent drafting and prosecution, as well as experience advising more broadly on invention capture and IP portfolio management, including carrying out a number of IP Audits. Amelia also has experience of giving patentability advice, and carrying out freedom to operate analysis.

Amelia has been involved in a large number of EPO opposition cases, and has experience of the entire process, from the preparation of the initial opposition or response submissions, right through to appearance at the final oral hearing.

Amelia has also represented clients successfully in several appeal cases.

Expertise

Amelia works on cases covering a wide variety of subject matter within physics, software, electronics and engineering, including medical devices, mechanical systems, electronics and laser systems.

Amelia is highly experienced in the field of medical technology – with experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications relating to both medical devices and software. These have covered technology including scaffolds for bone growth, blood sampling and testing devices, medical syringes, an intestinal sampling capsule, and software solutions for detection of medical conditions including for determination of parameters relating to the heart.

As well as medical software, Amelia has experience more broadly working on patent applications relating to a wide variety of software. Amelia also has experience advising on patent applications relating to lasers and optical systems and also on electronics and communications systems including semiconductor chips.

Amelia has a passion for environmental issues, and is a member of Dehns’ Environmental and Social Responsibility Group. She is also pleased to have supported clients working on a number of green technologies including electric vehicle charging, home energy management, energy storage and mooring systems for offshore energy harvesting systems.

Amelia also has experience working on a wide variety of mechanical engineering inventions.

Higher Education

MPhys Phil Physics and Philosophy, Oxford University, 2017

During her final year Amelia studied Lasers and Quantum Information processing covering topics including quantum computing and quantum cryptography. She also completed a thesis on ‘Probability in the Everett Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics’.
