Background
Tim is a European and UK Chartered Patent Attorney who has particular expertise in the fields of software, artificial intelligence, computer systems, electronics and signal processing. He graduated from the University of Oxford in 2001 following a four-year Master’s degree in Mathematics, which included specialisms in cryptography, discrete mathematics, and programming-language theory. He then spent five years at Sharp Corporation’s R&D labs, working on embedded software, integrated-circuit design, security and networks. After experiencing the patent process as an inventor, Tim decided to train as a patent attorney and joined Dehns in 2006.
Type of clients and client work
Tim acts for clients from individual inventors to multinationals, but has a particular interest in helping small and medium-sized technology companies develop and implement effective IP strategies. He works closely with several UK and Scandinavian start-up companies, providing strategic advice on developing and exploiting effective IP portfolios, including advising on invention capture, freedom-to-operate, licensing and enforcement, as well as drafting new patent applications. Tim also works for universities, technology transfer offices, and spin-outs, to protect and patent their inventions.
Expertise
Tim works principally in the fields of computer systems, software including machine learning, electronics, physics, and signal processing. He also works collaboratively with colleagues to protect software-related inventions in sectors such as chemistry and biotechnology. With a strong background in mathematics and physics, he is well equipped to handle highly-mathematical inventions in areas such as artificial intelligence, statistics, data analysis, signal processing and cryptography. In addition to drafting new patent applications, he guides patent applications through to grant before patent offices around the world, as well as advising on questions of infringement and validity. He also handles patent oppositions at the European Patent Office, and has been involved in patent litigation in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
