Background

Jack is an Associate in the Technology, Software and Engineering (TSE) group.  He is based in Dehns’ London office.

Jack joined Dehns in 2018 after graduating from the University of Manchester with an integrated Master’s Degree (First Class Honours) in physics, and qualified as a UK Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2022.  He was promoted to Associate in 2024.

Type of clients and client work

Jack acts for a wide range of clients, having acted for large multinational companies, SMEs, and individual inventors.  Many of his clients are based in Norway.

His work regularly involves drafting new applications and prosecuting them before the EPO and the UK IPO.  He also oversees international patent prosecution for a number of his clients’ patent portfolios.

Jack is also experienced in providing freedom-to-operate (FTO), infringement and validity opinions for his clients.  As part of this work, he has taken actions against third party patent rights to ‘clear the way’ for his clients to proceed with their planned or ongoing commercial activities.

Jack has also been involved with litigation before the UK national courts and the UPC.

Expertise

Jack has been involved in matters before the UPC since very early on its in lifetime.

In 2023 to 2025 Jack formed part of a robust team with contributors from many firms, working together on revocation and infringement matters before the Paris Central Division and the Mannheim Local Division.  These matters before the UPC were part of a complex multi-jurisdictional dispute spanning before the EPO and the UK, German, Dutch and US courts, and so close collaboration with all members of the team was essential to achieving the client’s goals.  He was actively involved in preparing submissions to be filed at both Divisions, including preparing submissions relating to expert evidence and having experts heard before the Paris Central Division.

Jack has since maintained a keen interest in the UPC, and continues to represent clients’ interests before the UPC.

Technical Expertise

Jack has technical expertise in the fields of medical devices, offshore structures, underwater robotics, oil-and-gas, HVAC, and fire safety and protection, amongst others.
