Derek Matthews


Derek is a UK Registered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney.

He joined Dehns in 1984, was made a Partner in 1995 and is a senior member of Dehns’ Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Chemical Engineering group. He graduated from Imperial College with a First Class Honours Degree in Chemistry (1981), and was subsequently awarded a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of London (1985).

Type of clients and client work

Derek works with a wide range of organisations, but the majority of his work is with blue chip multinationals based in the UK and overseas. He drafts and prosecutes patent applications and acts on behalf of clients in a variety of EPO opposition matters.  He has experience of running EPO oppositions in parallel with UK High Court litigation.

Derek handles patent work in all types of chemical fields and is currently active in the areas of fluoropolymers and fluorochemicals, biocides, pulp/papermaking chemicals, pharmaceuticals and inkjet printing inks.
