Background

Phil is a Chartered UK Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney with a First Class Honours degree in Physics and a PhD in laser physics and photorefractive materials. He joined Dehns in 1994 and became a Partner in 2002.

 

Expertise

Phil is an experienced patent attorney with technical expertise across a wide range of high-technology physics and engineering fields including photonics, holography, optoelectronics, mass spectrometry, oil drilling and exploration, medical devices, nanotechnology, optical communication systems, endoscopes and aerosol provision devices.

Phil acts for several major corporations including BAT and FUJIFILM. He provides patentability, infringement, validity and other strategic advice and is a patent drafting, patent prosecution and registered designs expert with a high allowance rate.

He is recognised by IAM300 as being particularly experienced in IP strategy and he enjoys helping start-ups and SMEs develop and execute an IP strategy which seeks to increase VC investability.

Phil is a Business Development partner and is a regular visitor to the US, Japan and China.

He was also recommended in the 2020 edition of The Legal 500 directory.

Phil is also a sub-4 hour marathon runner.
