Background

Olivia joined Dehns in November 2013 and was made an associate in 2014.  After completing her doctorate thesis at the Max Planck Institute of Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, she joined the IP profession in 2007 training with Haseltine Lake LLP, and has been handling patent and design work originating from the U.K., Europe, and worldwide since. Olivia is a native Cantonese speaker and has a working knowledge of Mandarin Chinese.

Type of clients and client work

Olivia is experienced in working with private clients and small start-up companies as well as multinational corporations.  She is particularly passionate in helping individual inventors and SMEs with protecting their intellectual properties, as she appreciates how confusing it can be to navigate the patent system without prior experience.  For these inventors and SMEs, Olivia understands the importance of securing strong protection for an invention that is commercially essential to their business while balancing this need with the cost and timescale in obtaining the protection.

Many of Olivia’s clients are large companies with specific emphasis on R&D.  These include both UK-based and overseas companies, for which she has worked both directly with their R&D departments and through local patent agents, drafting and prosecuting patent applications as well as advising on the European patent system and filing strategies.

Her language skills have led her to work with many Chinese companies over the years, providing language support in addition to her expertise in the European patent system, which has been much appreciated by Olivia’s Chinese clients.

Expertise

Olivia has a wide interest in many areas of the physical science and technology, and has worked on inventions in the fields of engineering, electronics, computer software, telecommunications, and communication networks.  Examples include oil exploration equipment, gas turbine engines, apps, graphics processing software and devices, and mechanical devices such as sports equipment and construction tools.
